The house-side entrance to the secret Indian Raid Tunnel, which extends 60’ underground to the blacksmith forge, is located behind the wall that has the storage racks for glassware. The entrance was sealed with a cinder block wall, covered by paneling, in the 1920s when water pipes for modern indoor plumbing were installed through the tunnel. Various legends have arisen over the years as to why the tunnel was sealed; the legends vary from pragmatic (the owners being worried that the tunnel might cave in on their children while they played inside it) to the humorous (the owners being distraught by continually finding drunken guests passed out inside during their wild Prohibition-era parties)
